I use the Bowen Family Systems approach, described as a "theory of human behaviour that views the family as an emotional unit and uses systems thinking to describe the unit’s complex interactions". By taking this broader family systems approach I provide a more thorough and in depth assessment of presenting relationship issues.
A family systems approach informs the most effective future direction for a relationship and helps define the goals each hopes to achieve. Identifying the issues that each person in the relationship is struggling with can help create lasting change for the future.
Identifying how we contribute to issues instead of putting a blaming focus on our partner will assist with creating a more skilful approach to communication and conflict resolution. Differences in any relationship are normal and inevitable. It is not about avoiding conflict but how to address it in more skilful and healthy ways. When conflict goes unaddressed, it will compound pain and problems and create more reactivity. Such conflict can lead to more distancing, misunderstanding and unaddressed needs within the relationship. Learning to recognise unhelpful patterns will help each individual find positive ways to navigate life's inevitable ups and downs. Learn more about the Bowen Family Systems Theory.
